Soil carbon, microbial activity and nitrogen availability in agroforestry systems on moderately alkaline soils in northern India

چکیده
The present investigation aimed to analyze the role of agroforestry systems in improving soil organic matter status, microbial activity and nitrogen availability with a view to effective management of the fertility of moderately alkaline soils. The study site was located at Karnal (29◦59′N, 76◦51′E, 250 m.s.l.) and the systems were characterized by a rice–berseem crop rotation; agrisilvicultural systems of Acacia, Eucalyptus and Populus along with rice–berseem and single species tree plantations. Soil microbial biomass was measured using the fumigation extraction technique and nitrogen mineralization using the aerobic incubation method. Microbial biomass carbon was low in rice–berseem crops (96.14 mg g−1 soil) and increased in soils under tree plantations (109.12–143.40 mg g−1 soil) and agrisilvicultural systems (133.80–153.40 mg g−1 soil). Microbial biomass was higher by 42% (microbial C) and 13% (microbial N) in tree-based systems as compared to monocropping. Microbial biomass immobilized 2.32–2.57% of the soil carbon and 4.08–4.48% of the soil nitrogen in tree-based systems. Soil carbon increased by 11–52% due to integration of trees along with the crops for 6–7 years. Cropland management practices and tree species influenced CO2-C production, biomass specific respiratory activity, and nitrogen mineralization rates. In tree-based systems, soil inorganic N levels were higher by 8–74% and nitrogen mineralization by 12–37% as compared to monocropping. On the basis of increased soil organic matter content, enlarged soil microbial biomass pool and greater soil N availability, agrisilvicultural systems have been found to be ecologically sustainable land-use systems for utilizing moderately alkaline soils. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Similar to plants, soil salinity may reduce microbial growth and activities in different ways. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different levels of salinity on some microbial indices in the presence and absence of plant's living roots. In this study, five levels of salinity using NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and KCl and three soil media (soil with no plant, soil cultivated with wheat...
متن کاملThe effect of forest degradation and land use change on some soil biological indexes (case study: Persian oak (Quercus brantii Lindl) forests in Fars province)
To understand the effects of forest degradation and their conversion to farmlands, the current research was conducted with emphasis on some soil biological indexes. In this regard, two different land use including an oak natural stand and a farm next to the forest and under cultivation since 20 years ago were surveyed. Within the each land use, three sampling plots with 10×10 meter dimension we...

Studies to the feasibility to characterize soil types by soil microbiological and biochemical analysis focus on the existence of microbial and biochemical characteristics distinctive to individual soil types. Many authors have attempted to elucidate relationships between microbiological and physico-chemical properties of different soil types (DUTZLER-FRANZ, 1977a, b; KHAZIYEV and KHABIROV, 1983...
متن کاملSYNTHESIS AND EMERGING IDEAS Responses of soil microorganisms to resource availability in urban, desert soils
Terrestrial desert ecosystems are strongly structured by the distribution of plants, which concentrate resources and create islands of fertility relative to interplant spaces. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition resulting from urbanization has the potential to change those spatial patterns via resource inputs, resulting in more homogeneous soil resource availability. We sampled soils at 12 dese...
متن کاملSoil Biological Activity Contributing to Phosphorus Availability in Vertisols under Long-Term Organic and Conventional Agricultural Management
Mobilization of unavailable phosphorus (P) to plant available P is a prerequisite to sustain crop productivity. Although most of the agricultural soils have sufficient amounts of phosphorus, low availability of native soil P remains a key limiting factor to increasing crop productivity. Solubilization and mineralization of applied and native P to plant available form is mediated through a numbe...
